Severity: High

A high-severity vulnerability has been disclosed affecting Windows Shell, impacting multiple Windows desktop and server operating systems commonly used across enterprise and financial infrastructure environments.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-96951, is a command injection vulnerability in Windows Shell. A flaw in the way Windows Shell handles and neutralises special elements within commands means that a remote, unauthenticated attacker can craft malicious input that causes the shell to interpret injected commands, bypassing an intended security feature. This could allow an attacker to circumvent security controls that would ordinarily prevent execution of untrusted commands or content, potentially exposing affected systems to further exploitation over a network without requiring any authentication or user credentials.

As part of Beeks’ commitment to supporting operational resilience and cyber risk management, this advisory is intended to help organisations assess exposure and implement appropriate mitigations.

Affected software:

  • Windows Shell – affected Windows releases prior to the patched version
  • Windows 10 1607-1809
  • Windows 11 21H1-26H1
  • Windows Server 2012, 2022 and 2025

Immediate Recommended Actions:

  • Apply the latest security patches released by Microsoft to remediate this vulnerability — this is the primary and most effective remediation.
  • Where immediate patching is not possible, restrict network access to affected systems and limit exposure of Windows Shell functionality to untrusted or external sources.
  • Review and audit systems for indicators of unexpected command execution or security feature bypass events, particularly on hosts accessible over a network.
  • Ensure endpoint detection and response (EDR) tooling is active and up to date on all affected hosts, as behavioural detections may identify exploitation attempts in the absence of a patch.
  • Monitor vendor security channels and the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue for updated guidance and indicators of active exploitation as they become available.
